Harlan Coben's Pilljar a riller
He’s done it again! Harlan Coben lovers of such classics like Tell No One and the Myron Bolitar series will adore Pilljar: e rilling Jar , now on bookshelves and already being turned into a major MAX miniseries. In it, Coben takes us to a world, much like the earth, where a lot of stu that doesn’t relate to the story also takes place. It takes only ve chapters to get to the heart of the suspense: What is the pilljar? What’s in it? Where did it come from? Does it always sit on the shelf? Woah! Did it move? No, it didn’t. But can you imagine if it did!? Just as with Netix’s smash adaptation, Fool Me Once , the lead character, Cindy, must deal with a tragic monotony of nor- malcy, coping with the traumas of everyday tedium in passively aggressive, unhelp- ful ways. Yet, just as with all of Coben’s signature minutiae, there’s plenty of twists. e part where it turns out the guy with all the rakes and mops is actually a janitor, was riveting. And in the end, when you’re won- dering who picked up the paintbrush, and it turned out to literally be the woman who was holding the paintbrush, you’ll just die.
Around the middle of the book Coben throws us another plot twist. Chapter 21 delves into the origins and evolution of 12th century Celtic music, and while it didn’t make any sense or relate to the story or characters on any level, not even abstractly, it was, in its own way very educational despite being somewhat elementary in nature, as if written for an 8th grade term paper. From there you can’t help but read on; with de , verbose styling, Corben takes you on a thrilling crawl through the ankle-deep, semi-dark world of badgering people with horrible teeth, who may or may not, and de nitely did not, have anything to do with anything. It was also an interesting strategy to solve the mystery and reveal all key clues in the prologue; it helped introduce the other approximately 211 subsequent clues that were more ‘extemporaneous’ and ‘unrelated.’ A randomly-timed Deus Ex Machina in every chapter! e good guy is the bad guy! Only at the end do you receive the kind of clarity and stupor that makes you understand humanity. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll stare aimlessly into the plain, white wall.

Ya gotta stay humble By HUGH JOLLYDAB I was reecting the other night as I loaded my dab rig with a stainless steel little scoop, how far I’d come. Notice I didn’t say, "loaded my McGuyver gravity bong with a wax top- per using a rusty nail." Remember when that was like, my calling card? Even though I’ve come so far, and occasionally dab with the best of them, and like, go out and see shows and my Corolla is still in pretty good shape, the truth is pretty obvious now and then: ya always gotta stay humble. Even though we smoke the blunts rolled in caviar now, who’s the chode still pickin’ out roaches for the wake and bake the next morning? is guy. In fact, remember my “pot stash?” It’s what I used to call that potted plant out on the balcony that died, and now it’s a bunch of weeds and I kinda use it as an ashtray. I used to pull a handful of roaches outta that thing when I was dry to just, you know, get that nice gooey weed high I needed before going into 12 hours of scraping resin from all my pipes. Well guess what I did last friday night? Not jonesin’ or low by any means. I just shed a good 10 roaches out and loaded up the bong, just for the memories, if you can believe it. It hit hard, and my lungs hurt for a couple days, but in a good way. No more Goodwill brand suits for this guy, it's all Temu now--I’ve moved up. Damn, remember when I was in that tiny studio, with the toilet in the kitchen? And now here I am sittin’ pretty with a freakin’ one bedroom with its own bathroom, even a front closet. And a view of Clancy’s! I always know when it’s time for a bucket of wings. But I still try to keep it real whenever I can. Still make my bong ice in a tray. And sometimes I go park in rundown parking lots in front of abandoned KMarts and other great places I used to sit for hours, waiting for my hookup to nally arrive. Even though he was always late, and the bag was always a
little light, and overpriced, and inconsistent as fudge, I still miss it. Once I thought I saw another dude waiting for his connect -- but I didn’t want to freak him out with my tales of dankness. Just knowing I’d been there once -- and have come so far -- that was reward enough, yo. Life’s better now, but sometimes I wish I could have it all back. I miss that goose chase and not knowin’ about the next rip, or whether I’d make it through the week or even night with the satchel at low levels. And know what? I’ve got the-the, uh, the Pu co thingy, and I had one of those huge Volcano, you-knows, that just sits on top of my dresser, but you know what else I still got? Ol’ Victor, that dis gured two stem bong with zombie teeth that I got in Juárez. Remember that? Mad times from college, yo. ese days I got straight up pure kief layin’ around to just make edibles all day or toss in my dinner, but you know what I’m doin’, dog? Gonna chill with some old school brownies! Betty Crocker style, just add wa- ter! Sure I might have to eat the whole tray to feel anything, but if that’s what it takes to hold onto your roots, then so be it. We ain't kings, yo. Ya gotta stay humble.

Explosive Defecation in Public is Wrong No Matter What, Sir By MR. MILTON, SR. I must stop you, sir. I saw you relieving your case of the rumble-booty over there in the Sporting Goods section and I ask you, have you no shame, no decency? Chocolate thun- der all over the bike helmets? Sloshing the Aztec two-step all over those skateboards? From the looks of it, you’ve brewed a whole batch of Chef Boyardee and tracked it through the aisles! Is there anything more vile? Do you not see the bell tolls for us all? We can’t just blurgle the joggins like total anarchists, wherever we please! Can we not all agree that projectile diarrhea should be kept indoors, at home, and not brought to a golf club or bridal shower or pep rally? Sure, we can’t concur about the books in libraries, or how much taxes to collect and pay for what, but should this not be the one principle we can all agree upon? at not you, myself, nor any other living person in our nation, is privy to freedoms beyond this restriction? Can we not all agree at least on one sole principle, that we members of society cannot merely strew our own feces about in public like Johnny Appleseed a er a bottle of poorly-aged apple bourbon? Can we all not commit to keep such atrocities to the privacy of our own home latrines? If others feel di erently about turning your posteriors into re hoses for the public evacuation of your bowels, then I’ll surely consider. But I don’t think I’m an inch out of line to say, if you’re going to “make” like you just got back from a Tijuana taco stand, please step away from the bus stop! Cork that crapper at the funeral. Let’s not oat a trout while we’re sitting at the DMV. And let’s stop pinching that loaf in the elevator (it’s bad enough with the cabbage aroma).
If you’ve got to launch a torpedo, especially of the Jackson Pollack style, for the love of crackers and Cheez Whiz, use the facilities? Now I know, sometimes you’ve just gotta cra a fudge pop. I’m sure we’ve all had to cut some rope when we’re campin’. And yes, I have had that urge to lay a brick at the DMV myself. But I didn’t let the turtles loose. And neither should you! Where have we gone in this society where we just don’t care at all, whether our fellow neighbor hunkers down to slop out the bum slugs right there in the street? Why did you , sir? What would our forefathers, and their fathers, say if they knew we’d all just start walkin’ around with our butt burritos out for all to see? Know this: Your deuces are your own. No matter how drunk or mad, happy or downtrodden you may be, your fel- low citizens depend on this one thing, this one noble and holy fundamental truth we must all embrace: that you deploy the U.S.S. Brown sh on your terms, door closed . If we can maintain this one principle, there is still hope for the Union. Otherwise, we fall. Sir, I purchased an extra roll of paper towel as an act of good will. Please pay it forward and go wipe up the trouser chili on the oor.

churn out their brand of catchy, witty tunes. It's Sorted ranks as their most polished e ort to date, and while the trio remain, as always, e ortlessly self-e acing, here they seem to fully embrace being in the studio for the rst time, adding layers to their sound without losing their edge. Katz continues to lyrically pull from the well of anxiety and uncertainty through the lens of modern, middle class American society and the absurdity inherently attached to much of it. Cheekface's music has also slowly pro- gressed to the point that one could easily envi- sion them opening for Talking Heads some 40 years ago. Indeed Katz o en channels David Byrne and his air for making the mundane sound mildly profound through lyrics that o en seem like what the elder would be writ- ing about if he were a 20 something today. (And, well, apparently the Angelenos have an anity for those legends anyway.) Four LPs into their career, Cheekface remain a welcome breath of fresh air and a band that just keeps getting better. Wings what is likely my favorite post-Beatles album from any of the Fab Four. Band on the Run could also be called "How Paul Got His Groove Back." Critics were not always so kind on his rst few e orts following the demise of the Beatles. A er lackluster reviews of a hand- ful of deliberately stripped down records, Band on the Run was a statement that he could indeed still rock and put out a great collection of tunes top to bottom. It transformed Wings from playing theaters into an arena and sta- dium act and restored his reputation to those who doubted him. At least half the tracks are still regulars in his live sets today. Album Notes from Erickson “The Soundtrack to your Chill”
Béla Fleck Rhapsody in Blue To those unfamil- iar with arguably the greatest banjo player of all time, Béla Fleck has likely released something
you would enjoy. Having won Grammys in country, pop, jazz, classical, folk, and world music categories, Fleck has never been one to shy away from something new. Now he's released a record to honor the centennial of its premiere: Rhapsody in Blue. In February, Fleck dropped the ve-song set to pay homage to George Gershwin and his instantly recognizable classic 100 years to the day the composer debuted it to a rapturous re- sponse in New York City. Fleck's takes include three variations with di erent ensembles, all with banjo in place of piano. ( e bassist on the third form, "Rhapsody in Blue(s)," will ring loud and clear for Flecktones fans.) Two additional Gershwin compositions, including one that was unreleased and discovered in the Library of Congress, round out the album. As Fleck said, “My rst thought was, ‘Rhapsody in Blue(grass)’ is the most horrible idea I could ever imagine. But when we started to actually explore it, I realized that it actually sounded quite good." Like everything he touches, Fleck pulls it o impeccably. Cheekface It's Sorted

Directions: Start by preparing the toasted coconut cen- ter, as it’ll need to cool. Toast and let cool the bag of coconut. Empty the white chocolate into a heat safe bowl and add coconut avor- ing. In a saucepan, heat cream to a simmer, then pour over white chocolate. Wait a few minutes to allow melting, then whisk until combined. Add the toasted coconut and let cool. e mixture will be a sticky, crunchy texture. Set aside. For the dough, cream the cream cheese and butter together. Mix in eggs and caramel emulsion. Work in the cake mix, and chill in fridge if needing to rm up a bit (makes it a little easier to work with). Portion into dough balls that are about a golf ball and half big (yields about two dozen). Flatten each into a 2-inch circle. Use that handy true scoop (or any spoon) and dollop toasted coconut mix in the center of the circles. Roll the dough up and around each center. Finally, roll in powdered sugar. Bake for 25 minutes on a sheet lined with parchment paper at 350°, let cool completely and enjoy!
